Case study · Endless puzzle game
GridFill makes an endless puzzle feel calm, tactile, and worth replaying.
A block puzzle for iPhone and iPad built around fitting pieces, filling the grid, and choosing whether to relax, race a personal best, or challenge someone else.

The problem
Endless play only works when the interaction stays legible.
Simple rules, real depth
The player should understand the objective immediately, while the changing grid and pieces continue to produce decisions that feel earned rather than arbitrary.
Touch is the interface
On a phone, dragging, rotation, placement, and feedback are the product. Small friction in any one of them can make a good puzzle feel unreliable.
Challenge without pressure
Some players want a quiet untimed solve. Others want a clock, progression, a daily puzzle, or a friend to beat. The same core game needs to support each mode without becoming cluttered.
Product decisions
Keep the puzzle central. Let intensity remain a choice.
Direct manipulation first
Pieces move and rotate through tactile controls, supported by visual and haptic feedback. The interface explains the rules through the act of playing rather than a dense control surface.
The timer is optional
Time can turn the same puzzle into a personal challenge, but it is not required. Players can disable the clock and preserve a slower, more reflective mode of play.
Progress without obligation
Stats, charts, history, experience, and daily puzzles give repeat players continuity while leaving the core solve useful on its own.
A solve becomes shareable
Puzzles and results can travel through images, QR codes, AirDrop, and direct challenges, turning an individual interaction into a small social artifact.
The play loop
See the board. Fit the pieces. Learn from the solve.
- Start with a grid. Open an endless puzzle or the daily challenge and see the available pieces.
- Read the geometry. Identify how each shape might combine with the open space.
- Drag and rotate. Place pieces through direct touch controls and revise the arrangement as the board develops.
- Complete the fill. The solve ends when every cell is accounted for, with timing available when the player wants it.
- Replay or share. Review progress, try another puzzle, or send the challenge to someone else.
Interaction quality
A puzzle earns trust one placement at a time.
State stays visible
The board, pieces, clock state, and available actions remain understandable while attention is on the geometry—not on navigating the app.
Preferences are respected
Timer and haptic controls let players shape the experience around focus, pace, and sensory preference instead of imposing one definition of difficulty.
Monetization stays bounded
The App Store experience is free to begin, avoids subscription pressure, and uses an optional one-time unlock for expanded customization.
Now
GridFill is live, with the play loop already extending into progression and sharing.
The current App Store release includes endless puzzles, a daily mode, shareable challenges, progress statistics and history, optional timing, haptic controls, and customization. The product has grown through focused additions that reinforce the same central interaction.
